Haircare routine for men is a critical, though often overlooked element of any well-groomed man’s daily routine. Your hair is often one of the first things people notice about you. So you need to be sure that it’s always looking its best. To help you out, we’ve put together a few tips and tricks to create the perfect haircare routine for men for hair growth.

1. Wet and Shampoo Hair

First of all, you’ll need to wet down your hair and work in some shampoo. Your shampoo should have hair-healthy ingredients like coconut oil and shea butter. You should avoid harmful ingredients like sulfates and parabens. Using your fingertips, (not your nails!) gently massage the shampoo into your hair and scalp until you’ve worked up a good lather. Then, rinse the shampoo out of your hair. Be very careful to get all of the shampoo out, as leaving it in will lead to irritating product buildup. With that out of the way, you can move on to the next step of the process: conditioning.

2. Condition Regularly

In addition to your shampoo, you should have a similarly high-quality conditioner with plenty of natural and healthy ingredients. Once you’re done shampooing, apply conditioner to your scalp and work your way down to the very tips of your hair. Be thorough but gentle as you’re doing this, and try to avoid applying any conditioner to the roots of your hair. Unlike shampoo, your conditioner needs a bit of time to work its magic, so don’t rinse it out right away. Instead, go about the rest of your shower routine and ensure that at least five minutes have passed. Then go back and rinse out the conditioner. Once again, rinse thoroughly to avoid product buildup.

3. Dry Hair Gently

Once you’re done showering, it’s time to get dried off. Though your first instinct may be to roughly rub your hair dry with a towel, try to avoid doing this. The material most towels are made from isn’t exactly soft. Rough material combined with the friction of rubbing is absolutely terrible for your hair. It may cause it to split, fray, dry out, or break, leading to unhealthy-looking hair no matter how good the rest of your routine is. To avoid this, either allow your hair to air-dry or pat it down gently with a towel.

4. Brush or Comb Hair

Wait for your hair to dry out a bit, then move on to brushing, combing, or both. Many hair types men have require different care techniques. This is more apparent than ever in the brushing/combing process. Depending on your hair type, you may need an assortment of combs and brushes, nothing but a fine-toothed comb, or something in between. Generally, the process will be less involved for men with fine, straight hair, while men with thicker hair and tighter curls will need to put in a bit of extra effort to get rid of knots and tangles.

5. Use Styling Products

Once you’ve gotten rid of all the knots and tangles in your hair, you can move on to the final step in your daily hair care routine: styling. Using your fingertips, work a bit of styling cream or gel into your hair, using your fingers and a few gentle strokes with a comb to get your hair into the desired shape. With that, give it a few minutes to set, and you’re good to go!

Men’s Hair Care Mistakes to Avoid

Haircare Routine for Men

1. Shampooing too often. Your scalp naturally produces an oil called sebum that helps moisturize and protect the hair and scalp, as well as capture dirt and debris. Left to its own devices, however, it’ll cause your hair to become greasy, which is why you need to shampoo regularly. Shampooing too often, however, will have the opposite effect, causing your hair and scalp to become dry, irritated, and flaky. To get the benefits of shampoo without suffering any drawbacks, we recommend shampooing no more than once every two to three days.

2. Conditioning your roots. While conditioner is great for keeping your hair moisturized and healthy, you should avoid applying it directly to your roots. Doing so will cause your hair to look and feel greasy, which needless to say, isn’t exactly the most pleasant.

3. Taking extremely hot showers.

While everyone loves a nice, hot shower at the end of a long day, high water temperatures may actually be harming your hair. Hot showers have been observed to strip protective oils from hair, making it feel dry, brittle, and prone to breakage. To prevent this, we recommend taking lukewarm showers instead.

Of course, as long as you stick to your routine and avoid these mistakes, you should be good to go, so get ready to enjoy your healthy new hair!
